Do your signers really need an account? (No.)

Picture the experience from the signer's side. They get an email asking them to review and sign a document. They click the link. They're told they need to create an account and verify their email before they can see the document. Many of them close the tab.

Why some tools require it

Account requirements are good for the e-signature vendor. They grow their user base, they can market to signers, and they can count 'activated accounts' as a growth metric. For you and your signers, the requirement is pure friction with no upside.

What actually identifies a signer legally

Under the ESIGN Act, UETA, and eIDAS, a signature needs to be attributable to the person who signed. The standard way to prove this isn't an account. It's an audit trail. An email address, an IP address, a timestamp, and a tamper-evident document hash are what courts look for. None of these require the signer to create an account.

The InkRobin approach

Keep the signing link useful, not mysterious

No account should not mean no context. Tell the recipient what the document is, who sent it and when you need it back. Use their ordinary working email address, give the email a plain subject line and send a short follow-up if it is time-sensitive. A clear request makes it less likely that a genuine signing link is mistaken for phishing.

For sensitive agreements, agree the recipient's email address before sending and avoid forwarding the link through a shared inbox. The link opens the document, so treat it with the same care as the document itself. If someone says they did not receive it, resend to the confirmed address instead of asking them to register for a new account.
